News Release: Richberg Wins 2014 S&D Culinary Challenge

CONCORD, NC – Thomas Richberg is living out his dream. As a high school student he wanted to go to Johnson & Wales to learn to be a chef but chose instead to join the Army. After finishing his tour of duty he finally got the chance to attend Johnson & Wales and at 28 he showed his great potential as a chef by winning the 4th annual S&D Culinary Challenge, held February 18th at Johnson & Wales – Charlotte. His winning recipe was a “Tiramisu Doughnut” using S&D’s espresso extract.

Richberg, a native of Savannah, Georgia, was awarded the $2500 Grand Prize. And to further his dreams, he will use the money to take a cooking course in France. While he was confident about his recipe, Richberg was nonetheless surprised to come away a winner.

“I’ve never won a contest like this before,” Richberg said. “I’m very happy as this is unexpected. But competition is a good thing; it keeps you on your toes and allows you a chance to network with other people in the food industry. My thanks to S&D Coffee & Tea for hosting the competition and also showing us around their plant in Concord.”

“One of the most rewarding aspects of our hosting these competitions is seeing how young and talented chefs can get a career boost from the experience,” said John Buckner, Vice President for Marketing at S&D Coffee & Tea. “S&D is thrilled to be able to sponsor such a wonderful event and we look forward to many more.”
