News Release: S&D Coffee Contributes $10,000 to Grounds for Health
CONCORD, N.C. — Somewhere in southern Mexico, central and northern Nicaragua or western Tanzania, a woman’s life is being saved from cervical cancer thanks to Grounds for Health. And since January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, it is perhaps even more meaningful that in Concord, North Carolina, S&D Coffee recently donated $10,000 to Grounds for Health to help support a most deserving cause.
Grounds for Health cultivates partnerships with coffee-farming communities to reduce the high rate of cervical cancer in low-resource settings. In fact, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women in the developing world, solely because they lack access to basic prevention The 501(c)(3) organization focuses on developing effective, affordable, and sustainable prevention programs with the long-term goal of reducing unnecessary deaths from cervical cancer. Grounds for Health establishes community-driven, locally sustainable programs in rural coffee-growing areas that work to prevent cervical cancer through early screening and same-day treatment of pre-cancerous cells. Over the past 15 years, Grounds for Health has screened nearly 25,000 women directly for cervical cancer and trained more than 250 local doctors and nurses to carry on the work.
When S&D Coffee learned about Grounds for Health, it realized it had found a cause well worth supporting.
“We at S&D Coffee realize that we are bonded by our product to people not only in the United States but all around the world,” said Lee Wicker, senior vice-president, specialty coffee at S&D. “If we can help a noble cause like preventing cervical cancer in coffee-growing regions, then it brings us all a little bit closer together for the general good. We applaud Grounds for Health and are pleased to help support them in reaching their goals.”
Grounds for Health Executive Director August Burns added, “Our work is far from done. Coffee communities in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Peru, Columbia, El Salvador and elsewhere have asked for our help. There and elsewhere, women are still dying needlessly and that is why the commitment from an industry leader like S&D Coffee to become a major sponsor of our efforts is so timely and appreciated.”
